The Trampa team is proud to introduce a new family member to the VESC product line. They called it VESC HD.
HD stands for ^ HIGH D density, because our goal is a powerful dual VESC created with the smallest coverage possible, with the maximum thickness of 18650cell. The benchmark is the standard credit card footprint.
Back in October 2018, Benjamin, who works for Trampa, and I took part in an e-skating event at London’s Redbridge Cycling Centre. It was the last warm day of the year, and we took the electronic skate back to town, through the completely crowded inner city. When we arrived at our downtown apartment, I told Benjamin my idea for a very compact layout of the new VESC motor controller, which we drew on a piece of cardboard. Unfortunately, neither of us had the time to advance the design process as quickly as we would have liked. In December, we managed to draw the first 3D sketch, which was refined the following month. In early February 2019, we finally started designing the PCB, followed by intense design meetings in Sweden. In mid-April, Benjamin made the final adjustments and we ordered the first 10 prototypes, single and twin.
In all of our tests, HD exceeded our expectations. After 15 months of testing and tweaking, we decided it was time to release our new baby into the wild.So what is the most important aspect of HD?Of course, the ratio of size to power to price is the main feature of the Twin VESC HD.
As you can see in the size comparison picture, the Twin HD is only a fraction of the size of a standard credit card. The amount of power it can put out on each channel is very impressive. At ￡325 plus tax, HD is very attractive. For many users, that alone is a big benefit.How does it compare with VESC 6?The VESC 6 to HD looks like a full frame compared to the APS-C sensor on a DSLR camera. While the VESC 6 is still the king of control, with three high pressure side shunts, the HD offers very good performance at a more affordable price. Both have a place in the market, so the HD won’t replace the VESC 6. HD is an addition to our VESC portfolio.
One of the advantages of the dual electric market is the modular concept. Twin HD consists of three PCBs, each of which can be purchased separately. Two power stages and a logic board form a complete unit. If you blow something up, you should be able to repair the device at a lower cost. We will do our best to provide a very affordable replacement PCB. We want you to benefit from this and we want to minimize the waste footprint. Assembling is super easy and requires no special skills! On top of that, HD is extremely redundant, with each part and port existing twice. Even if you terminate one port, you can use the second one. Two Comm ports, two CAN ports, two SWD ports, two PPM ports, and two USB ports. The whole logic basically exists twice. If one side fails, the other side still works. Twin HD is like two completely separate units, but with the convenience of dual ESC Settings.

ASS is the SW/HW feature of the future, not to be confused with HFI.
